The Aotearoa
Maori Homestay logo is made up of a person who has a hand extended in welcome
and a hand bent in front to embrace in hospitality. The figure stands on a dark
field, signifying the Maori world Te Ao Maori; the diverse
elements of culture and customs, social organisation, language, history and
environment — all that has shaped and make the indigenous people of Aotearoa
unique.
The left side of the oval represents the elements of the world that are enduring
and unchanging, Te Ao Tu Roa. The right side represents Te
Ao Hurihuri or the changing, present world. The whole oval is the
network of genealogy or Whakapapa in which all things are linked.
The koru colours are yellow for the sun, moon and stars — understanding
and knowledge; blue for the sky, oceans rivers and lakes — the
spiritual elements; green for the forests, vegetation, the hills and
mountains of mother earth — from whom, according to tradition, we all come;
and red for the people — and all living things.
